WHY THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE IS IMPORTANT? BY JAGADGURU SHRI KRIPALU JI MAHARAJ {BAHKTI} {BHAKTI YOG}

 Sentimental people have this belief Their intellects have this illusion or false pride "I understand everything" "Lectures don't interest me. I just enjoy sadhana." It's a good thing to enjoy sadhana But you should only say or think this when you reach an advanced state In an ordinary state, you can't do continuous sadhana 24 hours a day You get tired Your mind gets tired. This is called getting bored. It asks for something different. It is habituated thus. Hence VedaVyas has made an aphorism in Vedanta - (Verse 4.1.1) Listen to the teachings repeatedly and then contemplate over them as well. When you listen, you come to understand But this understanding you have now will be lost in the future (Sankhya 4.15.16) We forget even worldly things. Your father told you to do something and 10 minutes later you forgot "Oh, I forgot about that" Memory has become very weak in this age of Kali So you need to listen and contemplate again and again.
 Now, those who care deeply and are very detached They will contemplate But 99% of people don't contemplate Meaning when they hear, they understand And in false pride, they think they have got it They don't contemplate, or mentally revise the knowledge. "This was explained. And this. And this." Only by repeated contemplation will it become firm The knowledge will become strong and stable Then it will come into practice at all times Otherwise you will forget This is why from time to time you get angry, or greedy Or you become ignorant, or you hurt someone, etc. This is why these faults keep coming to you … You forgot. It had been many days since you heard It had been 10-20 days, so the knowledge was lost.

 Forgotten. Like when you go see a movie You remember everything that happened that day After a month, you remember only a little And after six months, you remember nothing at all! Your head is in very bad condition You can read at the beginning of the Bhagavatam Shaunak and other Paramhansa had asked Suta Ji (Bhagavatam 1.1.10) Shaunak and other Paramhansa are telling Suta Ji "O Lord, in this age of Kali, people will have short lifespans" People won't live for thousands of years like in past ages Only a few will even live to the full lifespan of 100 years in Kali Others will die at 25, 50, 60 ... only a minority live to be over 70 So 'alpa-ayu' - people will be short-lived and 'mandah' - their memory will be very weak and their intelligence will be very low "So Lord, please reveal an easy path for people like these" "Only then can they be benefited" The great spiritual practices of past ages Be it Ashtang Yog or the Vedantic path of Gyan Or austerities, or ritualistic worship These big endeavors were followed in past ages Memories were also good back then There have been such Masters in our country that they got names like Sushrut Sushrut - meaning he heard once and remembered forever Heard just once, no repetition He read once and mastered In one go. No contemplation, no revision. So his name itself became Sushrut Maharishi So these great powers of memory etc. that people had earlier no longer exist So we have to vigilantly hear again and again.

 And this audio-video technology of today's age is of great benefit! Sit in your own house and hear the Saint's words! Hear many times a day! Provided you don't have this pride "What to hear? I know everything." This pride is a great disease Terrible disease. It grabs hold. Hence, we people must hear again and again Keep the theory going along with the practice Then your practice will go fast. When we hear "I’ll have to leave this world alone" "Maharajji said this. When I am leaving alone, how will it feel?" "Everything will be left behind. Only my karma will go with me" "So let me earn better karma!" Like a greedy man always tries to add more money to his account He saves every penny to grow his fortune When his child asks for something he refuses "I need to make more, and you're asking me to spend!" So I tell you repeatedly to hear again and again Don't bring false pride to your head that you've understood everything Until you've realized God Don't think that you've understood everything You'll forget it. (Sankhya 4.15.16) There was once a king He met a celestial beauty and asked to marry her She agreed, but warned that it would be dangerous "If you see your reflection anywhere - in a mirror or otherwise" "Then I will become a frog" Like those in ponds "And you will lose me" The king replied that he would remove all the glass from his palace beforehand. So he married her and removed all the mirrors of his palace So that he would never see his reflection and she would never become a frog. But one day he went on a hunt A deer took him on a long chase until he grew exhausted and thirsty He saw a lake, and in his thirst, he galloped over to drink forgetting that he would see his reflection in the water And when he cupped his hands and saw himself, she became a frog. So when knowledge is forgotten, everything is lost.

 Man becomes an animal. The same mother, father, guru that he worships today He resents them when anger, pride, etc. come into him People go as far as murdering their own parents in the world And later they regret and mourn their great foolishness So I tell you repeatedly Hear the discourses again and again. Like love and enmity grow by repeated thinking of spiritual topics makes them firm and strong So strong that they stay with you all the time Knowledge should be with you always - never forget it Likes for a small example God is always noting down our thoughts and ideas You've been told this a thousand times "Yes, yes, we know this very well" But to know it well means to feel it at all times "He is keeping note" Then why did you get angry, greedy, jealous or any other defect? Why did you scold or resent that person? Krishna is in him as well Yes, I forgot. That's why I did it. If I remembered "He is in my heart and keeping note" then I wouldn't do any wrong I would always be alert "He is watching" So, without firmly established knowledge of theory We cannot do the practice at all times. This is the verdict. To practice at every moment To remember the knowledge at all times So that we don't do wrong And no material defect enters us and does damage. Whenever any wrong happens, it means your theoretical knowledge left you.

 Which means you were careless: "I know it all" But what you knew left you! It may have come back. But if it left for even a second ... Do you drive? Aren't you alert at every moment, and aware of all around you? If you forget or doze off for even a second That's it - accident or death "But I only dozed off for a second" Yes, and you were ruined in that one second In just one second Similarly, if we forget spiritual knowledge for even a second then who knows how we will sin in that one second A fault may attack us when we forget that He is sitting inside and keeping note We may be careless Hence we must hear again and again They are very advanced seekers who hear once and take it to heart, as people say They internalize that knowledge forever. They will never forget it. One may rarely find such a high-level seeker Else, all are ordinary souls And you will have to revise theoretical knowledge, and make it firm in your heads in order to benefit from it practically Otherwise you hear and momentarily understand But then it leaves you! You were careless. You earned a million dollars and then left it unattended Someone else saw it and stole it You were careless and lost all your earnings. Your mind is very defective You should keep it filled with knowledge And then use it to navigate the world Even then mistakes will happen from time to time But if you continuously endeavor they will slowly keep reducing, and one day finish. Nothing happens instantaneously in the world They happen incrementally.

You may not remember when you learned the alphabet How much effort it took to say one letter You repeated after your teacher to say individual letters and then made mistakes when saying even a basic word Before finally saying the word correctly That was your state at one point! But you kept studying and got your BA, MA, etc. degrees You practiced day and night - and now you don't make mistakes You speak correctly without any guidance. Similarly, in the beginning, you have to be very alert You have to drive in this bustling crowd with great vigilance This world is a busy crowd, full of faulty people They will act in a way that causes anger, greed, lust, jealousy, etc. The world is filled with such Understand they are your enemies and be wary "He is testing to see if I get angry, but I won’t. Go on, scold, and insult me.” Be firm, strong. But if you forget, you will lose your temper in one second Then what knowledge do you have? So you have to be constantly vigilant at first Once it is a habit, it is easy. Like a practiced driver drives with one hand and talks to people in the car While knowing what is happening all around him He sees and does everything He even answers the phone when it rings He does so much at the same time! Yes, he has been driving for 15 years. He has a lot of practice. But in the beginning, he panicked about using even the brake and clutch In the same way, by practice, everything will happen easily.
But the beginning needs effort. Hence Gauranga Mahaprabhu said: (Verse, CC Adi 2.117) Don't be lazy or careless about theoretical knowledge "There is a lecture from 12 to 1. Let's take a walk and sit somewhere." "We'll go when there is kirtan" And some people say "Lecture time! Hurry!" "Kirtan time. Let's roam around and drink tea." Some people have this defect. They don't take an interest in practice. Both are essential.
